How to use these guides:

Here are instructions for how to use these guides in your home, church, or school

These guides are designed to help parents, teachers, and church leaders teach the Bible to children using Charlotte Mason’s method for Bible lessons, which is as follows:

  • Reverently read the passage aloud.

  • Have children tell back or narrate what they have heard.

    • Note: The guide includes more tips and tricks for facilitating narration in a group setting.

  • Guide a thoughtful discussion with question and answer prompts, taken mainly from Paterson Smyth’s Bible for School and Home series.

Effective use of these guides requires preparation from the teacher, which begins with prayer. The guides are NOT meant to be read aloud verbatim to children, but rather to help the teacher prepare a Bible lesson that they can then bring forth warmly and fresh from their own heart and mind. Here are some recommendations regarding preparation in order to bring forth a lesson in this way.

  • Read the passage to yourself, taking time to put yourself in the place of the story.

  • Narrate the passage aloud to yourself.

    • Note: This is harder than you might think!

  • Practice reading the passage beautifully and reverently aloud.

  • Mark which questions in the guide you want to use as a help in facilitating the discussion. Think of your own questions and write them in the margins.

  • Bring the guide to class with you to reference, unless you can easily go without.
